Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is planning to reveal more details about its proposed $3.2 billion computer chip factory to Malta town officials on Feb. 25.
AMD is planning to build the factory, or chip fab, at the Luther Forest Technology Campus, which straddles the towns of Malta and Stillwater in Saratoga County.
On the 25th, AMD will present the Town Board with a supplemental environmental impact statement, a request to amend the zoning for Luther Forest, and an outline for the company’s manufacturing requirements at the site.
The Town Board will likely vote to refer the documents to the town planning board, said AMD spokesman Gary Silcott.
AMD would also provide similar documents to the Stillwater Town Board.
Silcott said the manufacturing documents will describe operations of the chip fab and a potential construction timeline.
“But no dates,” he said.
AMD must also get a permit from the state Department of Environmental Conservation, but Silcott wouldn’t say when that would be sought.
“There will be a number of permits required, and we will file for those at the appropriate time in the coming months,” he said.
AMD has not officially comitted to building at Luther Forest. It has until the end of July 2009 to make up its mind and still be eligible for $1.2 billion in incentives from New York state. The company is calling the potential site Fab 4X.
Although the company does not appear to be close to making a decision, it is going through the local regulatory and planning process now to ensure that it will be ready to break ground as soon as it makes up its mind.
Local economic development officials did a lot of the legwork getting preliminary approvals for Luther Forest, which can hold up to four fabs. But AMD must seek approvals for its specific plans.
A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, said today that AMD Chief Executive Officer Hector Ruiz is planning to visit the area next month, although Silcott said no date has been determined yet.
